JOB DESCRIPTION

Program Director for Student & Family Engagement (Full-Time)

Breakthrough Providence has a dual mission: to create a pathway to college for low-income, academically motivated middle schools students in Providence Public Schools, and to encourage talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education.  Breakthrough Providence is part of the national Breakthrough Collaborative, comprised of 30+ sites across the country and Hong Kong. Start Date: April 1, 2018

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit and select 6th grade student participants for our middle school program
  • Cultivate a positive student community devoted to scholarship and spirit, including maintaining regular communication with students and families and overseeing restorative justice practices
  • Organize and plan events including, but not limited to, Welcome Back Nights, New Family Orientation, Graduation, and Pre-Tests
  • Communicate organization’s vision for student support to high school- and college-age teachers and additional staff through trainings and professional development workshops
  • Empower high school- and college-age teachers with strategies to support middle school students and engage with families
  • Implement strategies to support students and their families through the critical transition from 8th to 9th grade, including counseling around high school options and opportunities for continued academic enrichment and leadership development during high school
  • Collaborate in developing student-centered curricula that focus on identity development, self-advocacy, and social justice
  • Build relationships with key administrators (e.g. guidance counselors, School Culture Coordinators, social workers) at middle schools across the city and high schools in the Northeast region
  • Organize and maintain documentation related to student support (e.g. student records, Student Support Plans, tracking data, program-wide mailings, etc.)
  • Teach a Unity & Diversity course to 9th grade Wheeler School students
  • Work closely with colleagues to develop and oversee all aspects of program operations and align program work with the organization’s vision and mission

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required plus a minimum of three years experience working with middle school students in an urban public school or community-based organization setting; advanced degree or experience in social work or counseling a plus
  • A strong sense of purpose and vision for expanding educational opportunity and promoting educational equity, particularly for low-income students of color
  • Ability to thrive in a small, fast-paced non-profit environment that values collaboration, creativity, strong work ethic, and Summerbridge Spirit
  • Excellent writing, organization, and technology skills
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed
  • Valid driver’s license; comfort and ability to drive a 15-passenger mini-bus
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
  • Knowledge of Providence-area high school options a plus
